What to Expect

Two Week Old Kittens

Floor temperature of the nest box should be 80 to 85 degrees.

Kittens at 2 weeks of age should weigh 7 ounces.

Ear canals open between 5 and 8 days.

Continue to stroke them.

At two weeks old, a kitten should eat a total of 3 tablespoons in a 24-hour period. Feeding can now be every 3-4 hours.

Continue to stimulate them.

Eyes will open between 8 and 14 days. They open gradually, usually starting to open from the nose outward. Shorthaired cats’ eyes will usually open earlier than those of Persian ancestry.

All kittens are born with blue eyes, and initially no pupils can be distinguished from the irises – the eyes will appear solid dark blue.

Healthy kittens will be round and warm, with pink skin. If you pinch them gently, their skin should spring back. When you pick a kitten up, it should wiggle energetically and when you put down near the mom it should crawl back to her. Remember you may be “mom” if you have orphaned kittens. Healthy kittens seldom cry.
